American Steam Rail

Today we visited the Essex Steam Railway beside the Connecticut River. It was interesting to see the difference between the railway here and comparing it with the trains back home.

I think that the rails are the same distance apart but the trains and carriages seem so much larger. They both overhang the rails and are so much taller than their British equivalents. It was weird standing in an empty carriage.

The train ran forward out to the point it was to stop and return. Except that there was no siding to let the engine move around the train, so the engine had to push the train back to the station. I went to the 'back' of the train, that was now the front, and got a great view of the track.

It was a lot more fun than I expected.
